EU-level guidelines for managing asbestos risks

26 Jan 2026

The EU Commission has approved guidelines for managing occupational health and safety risks related to asbestos. The guidelines help national authorities, employers and employees to implement Directive 2009/148/EC on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to asbestos at work.

The guidelines are available on the European Commission’s website.

A representative of the occupational safety and health authority in Finland was involved in the preparation of the guidelines.  The guidelines contain more than 50 photographs to demonstrate the management of asbestos at workplaces. Readers are also presented various EU Member States’ best practices for asbestos management.
The guidelines provide a comprehensive overview of asbestos management in the EU and offer readers instructions on how to handle asbestos. The guidelines also contain a lot of updated information on the dangers of asbestos.
