Permits and notifications - Young workers - Yleistä

A young worker is an employee who is under 18 years of age. A young worker’s employment must not be hazardous to his/her health or development or hinder school attendance. A special law and decrees are in place to protect young workers.

Some job duties are considered so hazardous or harmful that there are restrictions on assigning young workers to perform them. There are also job duties to which young workers may never be assigned. Before starting or commissioning any dangerous work involving a young worker, the employer must submit an advance notification to the occupational safety and health authority and the young worker’s guardian. Occupational safety and health authorities can waive the regulations concerning young workers in special circumstances.
