Markku Rautio appointed Director of the Occupational Safety and Health Department at the Finnish Supervisory Agency
On Thursday, 20 November 2025, the Government has appointed Markku Rautio (M.Sc. tech.) as the Director of the Finnish Supervisory Agency’s Department of Occupational Safety and Health Department. He will assume his position on 1 January 2026.
Rautio currently works as the Director of the Occupational Safety and Health Division of the Regional State Administrative Agency for Eastern Finland, a position that he has held since 2015. He has served the Occupational Safety and Health Administration since 2009, first as an industrial inspector for the labour protection district of Eastern Finland, as a senior officer from 2011, and the head of the industrial group at the Occupational Safety and Health Division of the Regional State Administrative Agency for Eastern Finland. Rautio has also held supervisory and management positions in the industrial sector and in the administration of various businesses and organisations.
The Finnish Supervisory Agency is a new, multidisciplinary government agency that opens in January 2026. Its responsibilities include permit processes, guidance, and supervision of the social and health care sector, early childhood education and care, school education and culture, environmental sector, occupational safety and health, rescue services and preparedness.
The core tasks of the Occupational Safety and Health Department are supervision of occupational safety regulations, guidance and advice regarding occupational safety and the terms and conditions of employment. The Occupational Safety and Health Department is also responsible for occupational safety permits and communications. The department is steered by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health.
