I'm a 16-year-old general upper secondary school student. Do I have the right to work nights or evenings while attending school?

Young worker

You can work during the day and in the evening, as long as the work does not negatively affect your school attendance. As you are still completing compulsory education, you have the right to refuse a shift that will prevent you from participating in teaching. Notify your employer well in advance of the days on which you need to be in school.

You may work between 06:00 and 22:00, and your working hours may not exceed the regular working hours of employees aged 18 or over in the same work. However, your working hours may not exceed 9 hours a day and 48 hours a week.

As a rule, you may not, at the age of 16, work between 22:00 and 6:00. Night work will require an exemption permit granted by the occupational safety and health authority. An application for an exemption permit will be submitted by your employer. Applications for derogation permits related to the work of young workers are processed by the Occupational Safety and Health Department at the Finnish Supervisory Agency. For more information, see the page Permits and notifications: Young worker, the section An exemption from young people's working hours and their placement and overtime.
